The main difference is almost the non existence of electronics...So.. anyway , ready for lift off..!!!.....Opening track 'You Shouldn't Do That' is a fifteen minute plus space-boogie epic . 'Master Of The Universe' is built around a delicious riff . The final track Children Of The Sun, begins promisingly. Doesn't really ever go anywhere. 'Seven by Seven' and 'Silver Machine' are included in the bonus tracks . 'In Search Of Space' is the missing link between Interstellar Overdrive and the 'Mothership Connection, maybe....

David Bowie - Reality

Bowie's best since Scary Monsters.

Instead of being a one-off comeback, 2002's Heathen turned out to be where David Bowie settled into a nice groove for his latter-day career, if 2003's Reality is any indication. Working once again with producer Tony Visconti, Bowie again returns to a sound from the past, yet tweaks it enough to make it seem modern, not retro. Last time around, he concentrated on his early-'70s sound, creating an amalgam of Hunky Dory through Heroes. With Reality, he picks up where he left off, choosing to revise the sound of Heroes through Scary Monsters, with the latter functioning as a sonic blueprint for the album. Basically, Reality is a well-adjusted Scary Monsters, minus the paranoia and despair — and if those two ingredients were key to the feeling and effect of that album, it's a credit to Bowie that he's found a way to retain the sound and approach of that record, but turn it bright and cheerful and keep it interesting. Since part of the appeal of Monsters is the creeping sense of unease and its icy detachment, it would seem that a warmer, mature variation on that would not be successful, but Bowie and Visconti are sharp record-makers, retaining what works — layers of voices and guitars, sleek keyboards, coolly propulsive rhythms — and tying them to another strong set of songs. Like Heathen, the songs deliberately recall classic Bowie by being both tuneful and adventurous, both hallmarks of his '70s work. If this isn't as indelible as anything he cut during that decade, that's merely the fate of mature work by veteran rockers. So, Reality doesn't have the shock of the new, but it does offer some surprises, chief among them the inventive, assured production and memorable songs. It's a little artier than Heathen, but similar in its feel and just as satisfying. Both records are testaments to the fact that veteran rockers can make satisfyingly classicist records without resulting in nostalgia or getting too comfortable. With any luck, Bowie will retain this level of quality for a long time to come (allmusic)

The debut album by Agitation Free followed a somewhat different path than your average Krautrock band, veering unexpectedly toward the Middle East, specifically Egypt, in search of atmosphere and material. Underneath the dueling guitars and spacy synth work, desert rhythms and taped sounds of dusky cities percolate, adding depth and spice to the otherwise smooth, Teutonic grooves. It's a tribute to the apparent sincerity of the band that the use of these motifs does not sound at all contrived, instead integrating quite well. The delicate, intricate percussion that concludes "Ala Tul," for instance, sounds as lively as anything by Steve Reich from around the same period. Tapes of street songs emerge surprisingly and effectively toward the end of the otherwise stately march "Khan El Khalili," providing a bridge to the Terry Riley-ish organ trills that begin the title track. "Malesch," like many of the tracks, spins off into a leisurely stroll, sounding unexpectedly close to some Grateful Dead jams. Even when it picks up pace, there's an unhurried quality that fits in nicely with the Saharan undertones of the album. Malesch is a solid, even inspired recording that stands somewhat apart from the usual clichés of the genre. Fans of German progressive rock from this period will certainly want to hear and enjoy it. The Golden Dawn - Power Plant

'The Golden Dawn' formed in Austin Texas. Borrowing their name from Aleister Crowley's 'The Sect Of the Golden Dawn'. The group shared the same label as The 13th Floor Elevators . Power Plant' recorded and finished in 1967 didn't see the light of day until the following year, The label decided Easter Everywhere should be out first. There's a similarity between George Kinney's vocals and Roky Erikison's . I doubt very much if George could muster a scream like Roky. This band weren't afraid to experiment. Wind chimes on the opening track Evolution , backwards guitar on Every Day',( Buddy Holly on acid). 'Starvation' and 'My Time' are nuggets . 'Power Plant' is an overlooked gem that owes more to West Coast folk Rock, than yer actual primal Lone Star Psych. Which is to be applauded..!.

Featuring five previously unreleased tracks that have remained hidden in the vaults for decades.. Two of the songs were never recorded again. Different versions 'Saga Of The Ageing Orphan' and 'The Friendly Ranger At Clontarf Castle' appeared Lizzy's debut album (Thin Lizzy 1971). Another version of 'Dublin' featured on the New Day EP released in 1971.

Vinyl rip......Reacquainted with this earlier today. Cambodian inspired psych folk album . The tracks are unevenly split between instrumentals and songs..Instrumentals have a slight edge .Very good album..!

'Bayon' was founded in 1971 in the former GDR. The nucleus of the band consists of the two multi-instrumentalist and founding members Christoph Theusner (Guitar, flute, piano, percussion ) and Cambodian musician Sonny Thet (Cello, guitar, percussion) who studied classical music in Weimar and developed an unique style of combining the Khmer-Pentatonic with elements of Classic, Jazz and Rock. Lead by Theusner and Thet the band played with changing members a mixture of Folk, Classic, Jazz and Rock. Between 1977 and 1982 'Bayon' released four records for the East-German 'Amiga' label. Even so Theusner and Thet concentrated since the 80's on solo projects 'Bayon' continues to exist and released several new records. (prog archives)

Moondog - Viking Of Sixth Avenue

Moondog, much like Sun Ra, was a notorious musical eccentric whose reputation almost certainly reached more ears than his music (the use of a Mr. Scruff remix in a commercial doesn't count). Also like Sun Ra, Moondog was a serious and idiosyncratic composer/musician who jumped from label to label and even resorted to self-releasing material back before there the D.I.Y. ethic was a movement. Viking of Sixth Avenue is the first compilation that spans more than one label, and therefore serves as probably the best introduction to Moondog's music that's out there. The music covers a lot of territory: from full orchestras to solo performances and from brief rhythmic percussion exercises to vocal rounds to swinging horns or dulcimers. Moondog was affected early on by Native American music when his father took him to an Arapaho Sun Dance, and this rhythmic pulse played a prominent role in his music. There are also a number of animal "tributes" ("Rabbit Hop," "Dog Trot," "Snaketime Rhythm"), including "Big Cat," which uses the sounds of a lion or tiger in the tune. He gets to the heart of the matter on "Enough About Human Rights!" where he inquires about the rights of other members of the animal kingdom. Some of the tracks feature his odd, homemade percussion, sometimes recorded on the streets of New York City with busses and traffic making their own contribution. "Lullaby (2 W 46th Street)" is very Asian sounding, while the first occurrence of "Oasis" could almost be mistaken for Sun Ra-style exotica. "Rabbit Hop" has some remarkably hip trap drums, while the second occurrence of "Oasis" wouldn't sound out of place in church. "Chaconne in G Major" is a beautiful piece for string trio and the concluding track, "Invocation," is simply majestic. The liner notes are quite informative about the life of Moondog, but a bit more annotation as to when the material was recorded and where it came from would have been helpful. Moondog is surely a major figure in avant-garde music, but it's some of the most listenable and even catchy avant-garde music you're likely to hear, and Viking of Sixth Avenue is probably the best place to start. Amazing album.

DJs like Gilles Petersen have been hip to the seven-piece wonder band Demon Fuzz for years, and as of the 21st century -- now that everybody's put away their James Brown records for sampling -- other club jocks are getting into the act of sampling this incredibly rare LP. Afreaka! was the only release by Demon Fuzz. Released in 1970, Afreaka! is a wild mash of Afro-Latin funk, breakbeats, tripped-out soul, jazz fusion, and psychedelic journeying. These seven black musicians took on everything that was happening, and were musicians enough to make it work for them. Most tracks run in the eight- and nine-minute range and get down with tough drums at the core, with rhythmic shifts happening on a grooved dime. Killer horns, Hammond B-3s, electric guitars, and deep tough slinky funky bass all wind together to create a mix so utterly intoxicating and fluid that it's difficult to take in one listen -- check out the Eastern mode sax solo on "Another Country" or the stomp-and-slide greasiness of "Past Present and Future." There's also a fine extended voodoolicious psych-soul cover of Ray Harris' R&B classic "Mercy" (subtitled "Variation No. 1"). This is the real deal -- solid, freaky-deaky, and groove-centric. The companion piece to director Tony Palmer's documentary of the same name, Irish Tour 1974 was recorded that January in Belfast, Dublin, and Cork at a time when precious few performers -- Irish or otherwise -- were even dreaming of touring the trouble-torn island. Northern Ireland, in particular, was a rock & roll no-go area, but Gallagher never turned his back on the province and was rewarded with what history recalls as some of his best-ever gigs. Irish Tour 1974, in turn, captures some of his finest known live recordings and, while it's impossible to tell which songs were recorded where, across nine in-concert recordings (plus one after-hours jam session, "Back on My Stompin' Ground"), the energy crackling from stage to stalls and back again packs an intensity that few live albums -- Gallagher's own others among them -- can match. Highlights of a stunning set include dramatic takes on Muddy Waters' "I Wonder Who" and Tony Joe White's "As the Crow Flies," a raw acoustic rendering that is nevertheless totally electrifying. A frustratingly brief snip of the classic Shadows-style "Maritime" (aka "Just a Little Bit") plays the album out in anthemic style and then, of course, there's "Walk on Hot Coals," a marathon excursion that posterity has decreed Gallagher's most popular and accomplished statement -- a status that Irish Tour 1974 does nothing to contradict. It's foolish playing favorites, however. Even more than Gallagher's earlier (1972) Live in Europe album, Irish Tour 1974 confirms Gallagher not simply as the greatest bluesman Ireland ever knew, but as one of the island's greatest-ever performers. The 1999 remaster adds nothing in the way of bonus material (shame), but greatly improves the sound quality.

This CD gathers Can tracks from various professional recordings, most of which include vocalist Damo Suzuki. "Up the Bakerloo" is an earlier version of the track from The Peel Sessions, though twice as long. It's one of those pieces where Damo Suzuki spouts endlessly free-form vocals in Japanese, German, and English, while the group sets up a steady but slowly evolving groove that effortlessly picks up speed or slows down. "Paperhouse," recorded from German TV, lacks some of the fidelity and texture of the studio version from Tago Mago, but is even more energetic. "Entropy," from a live show in 1970, is another long piece with Suzuki babbling while Karoli's guitar solos blast all over the place. "Little Star," with Can's earlier vocalist, Malcolm Mooney, sounds more raw even than the version on Delay...1968. Mooney's voice is harsher, and toward the end the background effects are much louder. The final two cuts are B-sides of singles that never made it on a proper album. "Turtles Have Short Legs" welds the Can style onto a cheesy pop song format that is not too successful. "Shikaku Maru Ten" is far more interesting, with vaguely ethnic rhythms and chanted vocals, and, like many Can tracks, it manages to be both laid-back and energetic at the same time. On the whole, Radio Waves offers a good selection of rare Can tracks, most of them quite well recorded. (amg)

The perfect Sunday morning record...

Brian Eno's first collaboration with Cluster, the best of this album's instrumental pieces are too emotionally rich to waste as mere background music, evoking feelings of hesitancy and regret that rescue the music from mere vapid prettiness. Three tracks in particular indicate things to come. "Wehrmut" is an ethereal synth piece with the pace slowed to a tantalizing crawl. "Steinsame" features a treated guitar playing a slow figure over a dark, almost funereal synth melody. "Schöne Hände" uses watery synth effects to highlight a shivery rhythm pattern. Other pieces dispense with moody atmospherics altogether. Tracks like "Ho Renomo" and "Selange" consist mainly of pounding rhythm patterns lightly embellished by piano or synthesizer, and "Die Bunge" sounds like an electronic goldfinch fluttering around a cartoon horse. While not the unqualified success of their 1978 collaboration After the Heat, Cluster & Eno remains an important album. Along with Eno's 1978 Music for Films, these works helped define the depth and promise of ambient music. (amg)

The Radiators From Space , Dublin punk band formed in 1975. Featuring of future Pogue Philip Chevron. The group moved to London and signed for Chiswick records. 1977 saw the release of a pair of classic singles , 'Television Screen' and 'Enemies' . Also in the same year was the debut LP 'TV Tube Heart' (tracks 1 -7). Shortening the band name to the Radiators. The group enlisted the services of Toni Visconti to produce what would turn out to be the final and best album 'Ghostown' (tracks 9-18 ). Released in 1979. Despite a slew of rave reviews. The album failed to have any impact on the album chart. The group disbanded in 1981. Cockles and Mussels is an excellent overview of a truly great band.

Bought a while back on the strength of hearing a VGG radio session. The BOX turned out to be a major disappointment. Whatever I listened to initially . Isn't here..

The sad fact about box sets is that there's always a fan out there who thinks they could have compiled a better one. An even sadder fact is that they're often correct, and the very notion of anthologizing Van Der Graaf Generator was a fraught one for that very reason. More, perhaps, than any other band of the early-'70s prog era, VDGG polarized their fans as much as the band's blatantly inhospitable sound outraged outsiders. They cut just eight studio albums, and all eight possess a wholly different character, all the more so since the band actually broke up midway through the sequence. Past compilations, then, sensibly dealt with one or other of those eras -- The Box, contrarily, swallows the entire beast whole, 34 tracks over four stuffed discs, and it gets full marks for courage, whatever its other sins may be. Unfortunately, there are quite a few other sins. From the collectors point of view, the most apparent flaw is the absence of any genuinely new material. Leaving aside two songs drawn from past posthumous collections, in official terms a dozen tracks are previously unreleased, including eight BBC radio sessions dating back to 1968, and four live performances from an August, 1975, show in Rimini, Italy. Unfortunately, not only have these long been available on two of the precious few VDGG bootlegs in circulation, but they're also taken from precisely the same source tapes, with apparently little effort made to clean them up. It's disappointing, too, that the especially hiccup-heavy 1968 session should be preferred over even a fleeting examination of the group's earliest strivings -- the original demos which the (genuinely luxurious) booklet discusses, the maiden "People You Were Going To"/"Firebrand" 45, the Aerosol Grey Machine debut album. On the plus side, several of these performances are spectacular, regardless of sound quality. VDGG were never going to top the pristine majesty of the studio take of "Refugees" (from 1970s The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other album), but a 1971 radio session at least shows them trying. The closing "The Sphinx in the Face," from the band's 1977 John Peel broadcast, too, is a magnificent indication of the oft-times chilling energies at the group's disposal. But the highlight has to be the churning live rendition of "In the Black Room/The Tower," a song best associated with vocalist Peter Hammill's solo output, but drafted into the VDGG arsenal following their 1975 reunion. A vicious, Byronic nightmare set to trauma-inducing turbulence and oft-times impossible time signatures; even with bootleg hiss and ambient crackle, it's like stepping barefoot into a snuff movie. The gig itself must have been terrifying. VDGG's first incarnation bows out midway through disc two with the purgative "A Plague if Lighthouse Keepers," the side-long monolith which highlighted 1971's Pawn Hearts album. Perhaps surprisingly, we get the regular LP version here -- surprisingly, because an astonishing live rendition exists, taken from a Belgian TV performance and, in its own way, it is actually superior to the official take -- plus, how many other rock bands are there who could so cleanly execute a multi-layered, multi-part 23 minute opus from memory? Probably about as many as would announce their comeback with the likes of "Lemmings" and "Man Erg," excerpts from the Rimini concert which informed the audience that whatever else may have changed during VDGG's absence, their ability to grind skulls between slabs of sonic cement was not one of them. Yet it cannot be denied that such moments become few and far between as discs three and four progress. Hammill, the band's chief lyricist, was conducting his own solo career parallel to the final VDGG albums and, while nobody would ever accuse him of keeping the best songs for himself, the fact that he did have another outlet ensured there was no longer anything to counteract his bandmates' long-held penchant for excruciatingly convoluted art rock -- a balance, of course, which was crucial to the original group's versatility. Of course there are still moments of sublime magic: the neo-classical vastness of "Wondering" would have dignified any earlier VDGG album, while "Sleepwalkers," "The Wave," and another live performance, "Sci-Finance" (from the group's final release, the in-concert Vital), all offer further insights into the passions which the group's memory still stirs. But too much of these final discs sounds are portentously overbearing today; too much is simply way too much, and the discerning ear retreats back to discs one and two -- or, better still, to the original albums from which the best cuts were culled: The Least We Can Do and Pawn Hearts, of course, but also the savage majesty of 1971's H To He, Who Am the Only One, and, yes, even to Aerosol Grey Machine. Place those four albums in a box together, and you might never need to buy another record again. You certainly won't be needing The Box. (allmusic)

Sunburned Hand Of The Man - Fire Escape

I like this album a lot. The review below has a different take on it..

.An amusing prospect that sounds great on paper but yields mixed results, Sunburned Hand of the Man invited Kieran Hebden, aka Four Tet, to remix some of the ensemble's jam sessions, and somehow managed to come up with their most coherent album to date. It makes some sort of sick sense, one supposes, that Hebden, whose electronica has veered from the beat-driven IDM/laptop pop of Four Tet to the electro-organic post-rock of Fridge to the more avant-garde sessions he did with legendary free jazz drummer Steve Reid under their own names, would be the one to remix the scattershot free folk of the Sunburned crew. Their stream-of-consciousness improvs are hit or miss; they sometimes manage to summon a furious ruckus that almost rocks, in their trademark off-kilter way, and it's Hebden's forays into free jazz-electronica that qualify him to understand just what it means to be "free" here. Most of these tracks meander discordantly and disjointedly in typical Sunburned fashion, or stagger and trip through wonky beats and manipulated live instruments in Hebden's standard cut-and-paste style, and there are some that stand up to the best of either artist's work. The most linear track is "Raw Backwards," a sinister spy theme mixed with psychedelic frug, but it's not even a minute-and-a-half long. "The Parakeet Beat" is straightforward enough with its layers of spliced beats and instrumental snippets from who knows how many sessions. The title track makes it difficult to distinguish where band ends and remixer begins and is probably the best example of pure collaboration. But the standout is "Nice Butterfly Mask": over a deep, flanged bass groove, disparate elements drop in and out of the mix -- moaning horn sections, guitar splatter and synth splutter -- all anchored by a live trap kit jazz shuffle. It's almost dancefloor ready...almost. (allmusic)

Straight into Les Rallizes Dénudés mid song in full flight..Second song, 'Heat Wave' is everything I love about the group. Great rhythm section, infectious bass line squalls of over the top feedback.The sixteen minute duration seem like five . (Studio - 1970) is a snippet of an acoustic tune. 'Otherwise Fallin' in Love' is a fave, lovely arrangement . Overall a pretty good album.. .

'In 1969 my world collided with the likes of Paul Rudolph, Duncan Sanderson and Russell Hunter, and for the next two years we felt like we could inherit the earth. Pretty large aspirations for four hippies from Ladbroke Grove. Remember, this was the dawn of stadium rock, with bands like Led Zeppelin rearing it's ugly head. The era of rock gods, inflated ticket prices, and total inaccessibility for fans. We wanted to tear it all down. Pick by pick. The thought of our fans PAYING to see us was incomprehensible. Fela Kuti - Fela's London Scene

In 1971, Fela Anikulapo Kuti's record company (EMI) agreed to finance a recording date in London for Fela and band. Now huge stars in Nigeria, this trip was, in a way, a triumphant return to the country that had provided Fela with a musical education and the club scene where he cut his proverbial bandleader's teeth. What is important to note is that he had become good friends with former Cream (and at the time of this recording current Blind Faith) drummer Ginger Baker who had traveled to Lagos a year earlier to meet, hang out, and play with Fela. Baker shows up on this recording (albeit uncredited) on the track "Egbe Mio," but more importantly helped get Fela gigs all over the city at such venerable venues as the 100 Club, the Cue Club, and the Four Aces. Recording at Abbey Road (a.k.a. the hallowed home of the Beatles) Fela cut these five awesome tracks in which his Afrobeat sound is more complex and jazzy than on the '69 recording session . At over 13 minutes "J'ehin J'ehin" cuts a wicked groove for its entire length pushed by the horn section and Tony Allen's superlative drumming. "Buy Africa" is a anti-colonial rant worthy of the Last Poets, and "Fight to Finish" very simply kicks out the jams. A stunning record that marks the beginning of Fela's best period of recording.

Album number two, Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky , is cut from the same cloth as the debut 'Sonic Prayer' albeit more expansive. . Earth shattering riffs epic guitar soloing underpinned by a solid grove heavy rhythm section . Track one 'Godspeed' is a sprawling sonic assault. 'Sonic Prayer' has more of a psychedelic vibe. The steady groove reminds me of the Band Of Gypsys, that's not a bad thing . The cover of Groundhogs protopunk classic 'Cherry Red' is the first time the group have ever used vocals..

Trans-genre masterpiece..........By the time Ney Matogrosso recorded this album. He'd already been a member of Brazil's multi million selling Glam- Rock combo Seccos & Molhados. Matogrosso's sapranino vocals were a key factor in the groups success.,,,Listening to Água do Céu- Pássaro now. One can only assume Mattogrosso was granted total artistic freedom to do whatever he wanted. The album is an eclectic blend of psychedelia ,funk, folk, tropicalia and indigenous music . Track one 'Homem de Neanderthal' begins with a cacophony of Amazonian animal and jungle noises. When the rain dies down what follows sounds like the wind blowing loudly through a sea shell. The music then kicks in with a brief freakout. The rest of the track doesn't catch fire in the way I had imagined... 'Corsário' is next Ney's vocal is great on this. More bird calls at the outset . Sitar and later on an orchestra create a lush late night trippy vibe. 'Açúcar Candy' features Fuzz guitars, overlaid with a funky Trumpet .The song climaxes (literally) in gasps and moans. 'Pedra de Rio' is a nice ballad .The rest of the album is just as good. My favourite track is the infectious 'Idade de Ouro'..

By the mid-'90s, Material was simply another word for Bill Laswell , so as Laswell' s fascination with ambient mysticism grew, so did Material's tendencies in that direction. After 1991's dark and reggae-inflected The Third Power, Hallucination Engine's long, spacy jams aren't exactly a dramatic departure, but the combination of Wayne Shorter and various North African elements is certainly interesting. In fact, the array of guest musicians is more diverse than ever Triklok Gurtu, Jonas Hellborg,Zakir Hussian Bootsy Collins -- the list goes on and on and even includes Wiliam Burroughs (who intones a hilarious list of "Words of Advice" over a churning mid-tempo funk groove). In his ambient mode, Laswell has been accused of turning too little music into too much track length, and there's some justice to those criticisms; here, "Black Light" and the unbelievably well-named "Eternal Drift" both plod along for far too long with far too little development. But that William Burroughs track kicks in just as you're about to fall asleep, and it's followed immediately by a very funky and very jazzy remix of "Cucumber Slumber." "The Hidden Garden/Naima" proposes an interesting juxtaposition of Arabic pop song and modal jazz, with dramatic and beautiful results, while "Shadows of Paradise" brings the album to a close with a gentle whimper, not a bang.

John Cale Terry Riley - Church Of Anthrax

A one-time-only collaboration between former Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale and minimalist composer Terry Riley 1971's Church Of Anthrax doesn't sound too much like the solo work of either. Around this time, Riley's works were along the lines of "A Rainbow in Curved Air" or "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band": pattern music with an obsessive attention to repetition and tricks with an analogue delay machine that gave his music a refractory, almost hallucinogenic quality. Though Cale was trained in a similar aesthetic (he played with .La Monte Young., surely the most minimal of all minimalist composers), he had largely left it behind by 1971, and so Church Of Anthrax mixes Riley's drones and patterns with a more muscular and melodic bent versed in both free jazz and experimental rock. Not quite modern classical music, but not at all rock & roll either, Church Of Anthrax sounds in retrospect like it was a huge influence on later post-minimalist composers like Andrew Poppy, Wim Mertens and Michael Nyman who mix similar doses of minimalism, rock, and jazz. On its own merits, the album is always interesting, and the centerpiece "The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace at Versailles" is probably the point where Riley and Cale approach each other on the most equal footing. The low point is Cales solo writing credit, "The Soul of Patrick Lee," a slight vocal interlude by Adam Miller that feels out of place in these surroundings. (amg)

ULTRASOUND - Everything Picture

A bad storm can be a good thing. Following a torrent of hype and anticipation,Ultrasound unleashed this two-part album full of discordant song craft and angular vocals. Lead singer Tiny Wood is the voice amidst this whirl of distortion, but instead of creating a rolling contrast to the musical typhoon (as bassist Vanessa Best does so well in her solo and backing vocals), he can't quite hold it all together. Everything Picture is an immense release in a number of ways: immodest song lengths, uncountable layers of production, and the fact that it takes two parts to state its case. If one is prepared for the abrasive onslaught, however, the album is actually quite powerful. The triumphant buildup of a fan-rallying song like "Stay Young" shows that Tiny and company know their music, and more importantly, that they know what it's like to love it all. The sprawling "Aire and Cader" also rolls along with such tattered pride that it's impossible to hate, while the re-worked "Floodlit World" is quiet class. Unfortunately, the album can be too much at times. Anybody craving a "relaxed" night of listening will have their eardrums shredded. Luckily, even when it's about to crack on its own self-belief ("My Impossible Dream"), Everything Picture blows its own flaws out of the water. The album's final song, the title track, is a growling masterpiece: a frantic, crushing breakdown controlled by Vanessa's wails and cries. The musical and emotional collapses are so moving, so stirring, that it sounds like the pessimistic turn to just about every soaring, triumphant song ever found on the planet. This reason alone serves as a singular, important experience. So while you might feel like that poor local weatherman in a yellow slicker getting pelted when you listen to this album, by the time the final track fades out you realize it was worth every last, sonic droplet. First released on Embryo in the United States in 1971, Zero Time has earnt a reputation as one of the most pioneering analogue synthesizer-led records of its era. Its influence was immediately felt, inspiring no less than Stevie Wonder to employ its twin architects, Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, to work on his incredible run of 70s albums. The record continued to galvanize developments in electronic music throughout the coming decades, artists as diverse as Gil Scott-Heron, Devo and Little Feat all gleaning inspiration from their work.It’s an imaginative and frequently bizarre album, with moments of dischord clashing with some beautifully realised, melodic swathes of synthesizer. At times it sounds as if it could be a distant, druggier cousin of some of Brian Eno’s instrumental work of the late 70s (Ambient 5: Music For Planetariums anyone?), albeit with decidedly non-ethereal song titles such as the wonderfully named Jetsex.It is easy to see why the record is so revered and also how much of a shadow it continues to cast over electronic music. Those with a taste for the musically curious will no doubt be rewarded.

The album's title turns out to be an insiders joke. The music isn't at all meditative,with the exception of a few brief moments. The majority of the sounds created are the opposite. More crucially there aren't any electronic instruments involved . Recorded in Berlin in 1967. The album came about as a result of a jam session fearuring 'Krautrock' legends, Edgar Froese,Klaus Shulze and Conrad Schnitzler.Track one 'Genesis'drones in much the same way as the 'Taj Mahal Travellers'. Track two, 'Journey Through A Burning Brain' ,is the best thing on here . Dissonant guitar sounds similar to that of early Pink Floyd, start the track off. After a couple minutes a harmonic organ sequence is added, again sounding like Floyd, drums kick in and the tune really takes off. Speeded up glissando guitar solos and freaky organ noises add to the intensity freaking out right to a cliamax .Near the end, the track slows. Dreamy organ and flute bring the song to the close.. 'Cold Smoke' is another freakout offering more of the same vibe as the previous track, only it isn't as good. Track four 'Ashes to Ashes' is trippier shorter and better.The album's closer 'Resurection' features a German speaker and church sounding organ... Overall the album is more psych than prog....Fine by me...... .

Based in and around London Pub Rock, was a short lived back to basis brand of rock music.Arriving post 'Glam', lasting until 'punk' took over , seen by some as a forerunner to punk, Ian Dury was a member Kilburn & The High Roads . Joe Strummer was in the 101'ers for a time. ' Eddie & The Hot Rods were tipped to be the next big thing .They're chances burned with the arrival of punk. 'Ducks Deluxe' were pretty good. Given the length, breadth, and impact of his career as, arguably, the most revered figure in British folk-rock since he first joined Fairport Convention 1967, it's no surprise that Richard Thompson has been honored with the multi-disc box set treatment not once, but twice. In 1993, noted Thompson, aficionado Edward Haber compiled Watching the Dark, three CD's worth of album cuts, unreleased studio outtakes, and rare live performances which offered a detailed chronicle of Thompson's career in music. However, not all fans were entranced with the set, and Neil Wayne and Nigel Schofield of the noted British folk label Free Reed Music sought Thompson's participation to create RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson, a massive five-disc set culled primarily from unreleased recordings taken from Thompson's own archives and accompanied by a 168-page book which includes an exclusive in-depth interview with the man himself. While RT is obviously a tremendous labor of love and a powerful testimony to Thompson's genius as a songwriter and guitarist, compared to Watching the Dark it's something of a disappointment. While the notion of five CD's worth of rare and unreleased Richard Thompson recordings is enough to make nearly any loyalist salivate, nearly all the cuts are live tapes of highly variable recording quality; though most sound "fresh off the board," an uncomfortably high percentage are scarred by noticeable technical anomalies (in particular boomy audience recordings and distorted radio broadcasts), and the 1972 recording of "The Great Valerio" from a Richard & Linda Thompson concert would barely be acceptable even by bootleg standards. (In all fairness, the booklet acknowledges the poor quality of the latter recording.) Also, given Free Reed's leanings as a folk imprint, it's not surprising the set leans heavily on Thompson's solo acoustic performances rather than his electric full-band repertoire, and while the solo stuff here is almost uniformly splendid, the proportions are certainly off in terms of giving an accurate picture of his body of work, especially disc three, which promises a set of "Epic Live Workouts" but which leans towards acoustic numbers with extended solos rather than the electric explorations that are truly Thompson's most remarkable live achievements. And though Nigel Schofield's liner notes offer an intelligent and impassioned appreciation of Thompson's work, the notes on the tracks themselves are less impressive, and the details on the source materials are often lacking or simply inaccurate (there are no Who covers on any of my copies of Shoot Out the Lights, no matter what Schofield says). None of this should suggest that RT isn't worth a listen -- simply put, Richard Thompson is one of the finest singers, guitarists, and songwriters to emerge in the second half of the 20th century, and there are dozens of dazzling examples of Thompson in full-flight here. Even when the audio is faulty, the performances are sterling, and there are a number of genuine rarities on-board, particularly on disc five, which features precious studio demos of a number of unreleased songs, including the haunting "Bad News Is All the Wind Can Carry," "Shady Lies," and "In Over Your Head." For all its flaws, RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson will leave no one with any doubt about the strength of this man's talent. Obsessive fans will find much to revel in, but overall RT seems like a grand opportunity that didn't quite pan out, despite a wealth of good intentions (allmusic)

This single from Moore’s initial stint with Lizzy is one of his best ever, a rock-and-roll firecracker barely three minutes long. While Lynott and British soul singer Frankie Miller trade vocals, ace drummer Brian Downey pounds away in the background. At 1:40, the guitarist kicks in with double-tracked slide licks that evolve into urgent, single-note bends. The crescendo builds as Moore continues the unison bends straight through the final chorus and a brilliant horn arrangement that brings the house down. “Little Darling” should probably be on every critic’s Top 100 rock and roll tracks, but alas, it remains criminally obscure. Sometime in 1968 Jazz Multi-instrumentalist Christian Burchard moved into the Amon Düül commune. Staying long enough to play on 'Phallus Dey' . Burchard formed Embryo in 1969 along with core members Dieter Serfas and Edgar Hoffman . Opal released in 1970 is in the main a jazz rock album, mixed with a heavy dose of psychedelia. Track one 'Opal' is a speedy burst of jazz -rock. 'You Don't Know What's Happening' which sounds a bit like Amon Düül , is better. Adding a violin to the mix. The band create a cool psych sound. 'Call' is all the free-jazz I can handle. ' End of Soul' is a spoken tune about the end of soul. Closing track 'You Better Have Some Fun' is the best of jazzy tinged tunes..

The 1975 album, a magnificent first album, recorded in pure mono, has been transferred to CD in exemplary form, a clean, sharp, crunchy, close sound that recalls the sonic textures of the Rolling Stones' first album, even as they cross swords with the Stones' arch-rivals of the era, the Animals, with a superb version of "Boom Boom." Released amid the burgeoning radio presence of acts like Thin Lizzy, Blue Öyster Cult, and Kansas, and the growing self-conscious profundity of Bruce Springsteen, Down by the Jetty was as refreshingly lean as anything the headline-grabbing '70s punks would later loose on the world, and as stripped down as the most basic roots rock. Lee Brilleaux's singing could go up against Eric Burdon's or Cyril Davies, and even take on elements of a thick rasp vaguely reminiscent of Howlin' Wolf (listen closely to "Roxette"), certainly better than Mick Jagger ever did; and guitarist Wilko Johnson could play Jimmy Reed, Chuck Berry, or Bo Diddley licks with equally imposing (and seemingly effortless) virtuosity. This record was one of the great '70s rock & roll albums, right up there with the Groovies' Shake Some Action and anything CCR left listeners, and ran circles around the Rolling Stones' post-Exile on Main Street output. The final cut, a killer live medley of "Bonie Maronie"/"Tequila" with guests Brinsley Schwarz and Bob Andrews blowing saxes, was a taste of what they did on stage with astonishing regularity, and could have sent the Ramones back to the drawing board if the Queens-based quartet had heard it. The original 'psychedelic speed freaks'. High Rise are a three piece who play a volatile brand of rock'n'roll. Opener Outside Gentiles is hard loud and fast . Sadducees Faith is amazing, the song kicks off with a speedy Bo Diddley beat. Two minutes in Munehiro Narita lets rip with a killer guitar solo, easing off to a funky beat. Just as you think the squalls of feedback signal the end, a heavy droning bass kicks in, the sound changes to what can best described as stoner sludge metal , 'cept there was no such thing in 1992. It's fair to say that UK/US rock groups influenced a lot of Japanese music in the sixties/ seventies. For the last twenty years the reverse is also true . This double CD reissues the legendary Tokyo improvisational group's Columbia LP from 1974. Like European experimental ensembles A.M.M. and M.E.V., Taj Mahal Travellers were dedicated to sonic experiments beyond categories of free jazz or avant-garde, and throughout the '60s and early '70s challenged musical norms the world over. Lead by Fluxus member and avant-garde composer Takehisa Kosugi, the ensemble featured instrumentalists Kyo Koike, Yukio Tsuchiya, Beiji Nagai, Tokio Hasegaw, Kinji Hayashi, and Hirokeszu Sato. The group adapted traditional instruments and electronics, yet saw no hierarchy in what could and couldn't be adapted into their battery of experimental instruments. Any number of devices were employed in making this massive and noisy drone piece. Recorded live in the studio, this music adapts methods from avant-garde, electro-acoustic, and ethnic music, and often takes the form of magnificent clouds of treated acoustic sound. The double-CD length is a compelling and thorough retrospective of the group, who recorded just two albums in the '70s. A vital and influential document of the Japanese avant-garde this was a hallowed artifact of the underground for many years. Made available in retrospect, it gives an insight into the early beginnings of an improvisational style which would be of incredible significance to the experimental music of later years. (amg)

Often considered the first psychedelic rock group as well as the first underground band to achieve commercial success, the 13th Floor Elevators were a Texas-based outfit that combined folk/rock, R&B, and hard-driving rock 'n' roll with mystical lyrics that espoused the virtues of drugs. Although many of their songs are based around the concept that ingesting LSD and other substances can take the user to a higher plane of consciousness, the Elevators' biggest—and only—hit was "You're Gonna Miss Me," a song that has nothing to do with drugs. A forceful, pulsating rocker about the end of a relationship, it features the intense tenor vocals and blood-curdling screams of Roky Erickson and the percussive electric jug-playing of Tommy Hall. The tune reached number 56 on the national Billboard charts in 1966.
Although the Elevators have influenced punk and alternative rock bands for almost 40 years, as a group they lasted just over three. During this time, they released three studio albums—Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, Easter Everywhere, and Bull of the Woods—as well as a "live" album that actually was a collection of studio outtakes with tacked-on audience participation. The band's first two albums are considered classics of the garage and psychedelic rock genres; the third is considered a worthy addition to their canon. Their lead vocalist, Roky Erickson, an eccentric musical genius in the vein of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd, is also a diagnosed schizophrenic known for legendary drug-taking exploits. He is regarded as an outstanding singer and gifted songwriter whose post-Elevators solo work includes moments of brilliance as well as disturbing, horror- and occult-tinged subject matter and imagery.
The 13th Floor Elevators were formed by Tommy Hall in late 1965. A student of philosophy, psychology, and chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, Hall had begun to experiment with drugs such as peyote and mescaline that were local to Texas and that were legal at the time. After moving to illegal substances such as LSD, he began to believe that drugs could enhance his personal and spiritual growth. He began to write song lyrics, and decided to make a popular local skiffle band, the Lingsmen, the mouthpiece for his theories. The Lingsmen were made up of guitarist Stacy Sutherland, bassist/electric violinist Benny Thurman, drummer John Ike Walton, and vocalist Max Rainey. When Rainey left the group, Hall invited Erickson, a 17-year-old wunderkind in the R&B band the Spades, to join as lead singer and rhythm guitarist.
Shortly before the formation of the Elevators, the Spades had released Erickson's song "You're Gonna Miss Me" on Zero Records, a local label. The Lingsmen decided to change their approach to reflect the tougher sounds of bands like the Rolling Stones and the Kinks as well as the mind-expanding experiences that they were having with acid, pot, and other drugs. Thurman dropped the electric violin to concentrate on bass, and Hall began to blow into a jug to which he had duct-taped a microphone, thus creating the electric jug, a new sound in pop music. The Lingsmen changed their name to the 13th Floor Elevators, named for the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, "M," which stood for marijuana, and for the missing floor in American high-rise buildings.
The Elevators developed a reputation for ferocious live shows, and they became hugely popular in Texas. Their rerecorded version of Erickson's punk anthem—released nationally by International Artists Records, a Houston-based label run by Lelan Rogers, the brother of pop singer Kenny Rogers—brought them popularity around the country. However, the Elevators were less than popular with the Texas Rangers and other local authorities, who were unhappy with the group's personal drug use and public support of getting high. In 1966 the band was arrested for possession of marijuana but was released on a technicality. Shortly thereafter they relocated to San Francisco without Thurman, who decided to stay in Texas; he was replaced by Ronnie Leatherman.
In San Francisco, the Elevators became influential figures on the nascent psychedelic scene; they helped create the "San Francisco sound," psychedelic music that would receive critical acclaim and commercial success. Allegedly the first group to go onstage under the influence of LSD, they played at the Fillmore West and the Avalon Ballroom with bands such as the Byrds, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company. The lead singer of Big Brother, Janis Joplin, was asked to join Erickson as the Elevators' second vocalist. She declined, but always noted Erickson as a major influence.
In mid-1966, International Artists released Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators, considered a groundbreaking debut. Writing on the Vinyl Junkie website, collector Karl Ikola stated, "[T]he depths of soul evident in the debut are still so richly filled with an hypnotic 'n' spine-tingling-blast-off life-odyssey paradox that I'd like to be buried with an original white-label promo copy right across my chest." However, due to the fact that International Artists decided not to publicize the band in order to retain their "mystique," the album failed to reach a mainstream audience.
Shortly after the release of Psychedelic Sounds, the band's rhythm section left; they were replaced by Elevator fans Dan Galindo on bass and Danny Thomas on drums. The group returned to Texas in late 1966 but went back to San Francisco several times over the next two years. In 1967 the Elevators released their second album, Easter Everywhere. Thought to be more focused and even more lysergically enhanced than their first release, Easter Everywhere usually is considered the group's best record. Cub Koda of All Music Guide to Rock suggested, "Anyone wanting a real psychedelic album from the '60s should head right to the counter and grab this one."
By this time, though, the band was starting to unravel. The crowning blow came on the occasion that Erickson decided to go home while high on acid. His mother, a former opera singer who had released a local 45-inch single, had him committed to the Austin State Hospital, where he underwent shock treatment. After this incident, Erickson's behavior became erratic and unpredictable; the rest of the band also showed signs that their drug use was catching up with them. Offered a chance to tour England with guitarist Jimi Hendrix, they refused so that they could stay at home, stoned. Hall and Erickson, wrecked on acid, were found waiting in line to buy tickets for one of their own shows in Austin.
Late in 1968, Erickson was busted for a single joint. In order to avoid being placed in the Texas state prison, he claimed to be a Martian. The authorities placed him in Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Rusk, Texas, where he was subjected to treatment with Thorazine and other psychotropic drugs for three years. In the meantime, International Artists released the pseudo-live album and Bull of the Woods, a record that features songs by lead guitarist Stacy Sutherland and unreleased compositions from the band's first two albums; though praised for Sutherland's straight-ahead songwriting and musical prowess, the work generally is considered the least effective of the group's studio efforts. Like Erickson, Sutherland and lyricist/jug player Hall were busted for drugs, but each did jail time.
In 1978 Stacy Sutherland was shot and killed by his estranged wife in a domestic dispute; his tombstone reads "The Lead Guitarist of the 13th Floor Elevators. (elevators bio)
